What Are The Commonly Used Milling Cutters For CNC Milling

Apr 21, 2021

(1) Face milling cutter

The tool used for end milling is a face milling cutter, which can be a sleeve type or an integral shank type. The face milling cutter is suitable for machining planes, especially for machining large-area planes. The main cutting edge of the face milling cutter is distributed on the outer cylindrical surface or the outer conical surface, and the cutting edge on the end surface is the secondary cutting edge.

(2) Three-sided edge milling cutter.

There are cutting edges on the outer circumference and both sides of the face milling cutter. Three-sided edge milling cutters can process shoulder surfaces, grooves, etc.

(3) End mill

①Universal end mill

In terms of structure, it is divided into integral structure end mills and insertable end mills. The tooth end mills are divided into square shoulder type and long edge type. The long edge type is also called corn end mill.

②Fillet end mill

When the edge of the end face of an end mill has a tip radius r, it is called a fillet end mill. The tip fillet radius of the end mill increases the service life of the milling cutter. This type of end mill is often used to process the transition fillet of the groove or cavity.

③Ball end mill

Obviously, if the fillet r of the center-cutting fillet end mill is equal to the tool radius, the end of the tool is spherical, which is called a ball end mill at this time. Usually the minimum size of a ball end mill is $12R6mm. The ball end mill is developed from an end mill. It can cut into the workpiece along the axial direction of the tool and cut along the radial direction of the tool. It is mainly used for processing three-dimensional cavity or Convex and concave mold forming surface can also be used for orifice chamfering and plane chamfering.

④Chamfer milling cutter

The chamfering cutter is used for chamfering the corners of the workpiece.

(4) Keyway milling cutter

The keyway milling cutter is a two-tooth center cutting end mill. Both the cylindrical surface and the end surface have cutting edges, which have the functions of a drill and an end mill. The edge of the end face extends to the center of the circle, so that the end mill can drill along its axial direction and cut the depth of the keyway; it can also be like an end mill, using the cylindrical surface to mill the length of the keyway. When milling, the end mill first drills the workpiece, and then mills the full length of the keyway along the axis of the workpiece.

(5) Drilling and milling cutter

Drilling and milling is also called plunge milling. Drilling and milling is a high-efficiency machining method that removes machining allowances and is often used for rough machining.

(6) Thread milling cutter

Thread milling cutter is used for milling inner and outer butterfly surface.

(7) Drum cutter

The cutting edges of the drum milling cutter are distributed on the convex drum profile with a radius of R, and the end face has no cutting edge. During milling, the up and down position of the milling cutter is controlled to change the cutting position of the blade, and different bevel surfaces from negative to positive can be machined on the workpiece. It is often used for CNC milling machines and machining centers to process three-dimensional curved surfaces. The smaller the R value, the wider the bevel range that the drum milling cutter can process, and the higher the surface roughness value after processing. The disadvantages of this tool are: difficult sharpening, poor cutting conditions, and can not machine bottomed contours.

(8) Forming cutter

There are several common forming milling cutters. The forming milling cutter is generally a special tool, which is specially manufactured (sharpened) for a certain workpiece or a certain processing content. It is suitable for processing specific shapes and special-shaped holes and grooves, and is often used for mold processing.
